iTRAC: Editing Web Sites in the AES Browser

The AES Browser restricts students’ internet access to sites that have been authorized by the teacher. Teachers have the ability to edit the selection of web sites for the students to access at their workstations. Follow the steps below to add and delete web sites from the AES Browser.

§         From the iTRAC Virtual Desktop, click the Internet telephone to access the Internet browser.

§         In the Internet Browser (Networked) window, click the Browse tab.

§         Click on any of the hyperlinks to launch the AES Browser.

§         At the top of the AES Browser, you will see several icons.

o         Home icon will take you to the web site that is at the top of your list – in this case, it is the Applied Educational Systems’ home page.

o         Fav’s icon will take you to the list of internet groups and their associated links.

o         Teacher icon will allow you to browse beyond the list of internet groups and their associated links.

§         Click the Teacher icon, and enter your password. Once inside the teacher mode, the Add and Delete icons will appear.

§         Type the web site’s URL, and press the Enter key. You can either search for various sites by utilizing the search engine links provided with the AES Browser (Yahoo! and Alta Vista) or by entering in the web site address into the Address: bar and press the Enter key.

iTRAC: Adding Web Sites

To authorize a web page and add it to the Favorites List:

1.       In the Teacher Mode toolbar, click the Add icon.

2.       Select the desired group or create a new group for this topic.

§         Groups allow you to “bundle” together related web sites.

§         If you click NoShow the URL or web site will not be displayed, but it will be authorized.

3.       Make sure the URL is correct.

§         If you only list the domain, all pages that contain the domain name will be authorized. For example, listing www.aeseducation.com\ourproducts will only allow that particular page to show. But if you change the URL to aeseducation.com, all pages will be authorized if they contain that string in the address.

§         Press the OK button.

iTRAC: Set AES Browser as Default Browser

The AES Browser restricts students’ internet access to sites that have been authorized by the teacher. Students can access the AES Browser from within the Current Event and Timeline activities. Students can navigate to “authorized” sites and can copy article text for incorporation into their Current Event and Timeline reports.

To use the AES Browser as the default browser on the student workstations and/or the lab management station, follow the steps below.

At the lab management station, do the following:

§         From the iTRAC Virtual Desktop, click Lab Setup.

§         In the left bank of icons, click the Internet icon.

§         Under Default Browser Settings, select the appropriate browser for the workstation and/or the lab management station. The selected browser must be loaded on the stations in order for the selection to function properly.

§         Under AES Browser Settings, selecting Allow students access to web pages on the local drive(s) will allow students to use web pages that are loaded on the hard drive(s). AES recommends that you leave this option selected. Some modules include web sites that are stored on the local drive.

The browser settings will take effect at the workstations the next time the AES program (TC21, BC21, LC21, or CC21) is restarted.
