Summer 2020 Health Science Curriculum Updates

Throughout the year, the AES curriculum team reviews and works with subject matter experts to continually keep our curriculum up to date with industry standards and certifications.

This year, we focused on updating 15 modules based on feedback from teachers and changes in the healthcare industry:

  2. Bloodborne Pathogens
  3. Body Mechanics
  4. Client Status
  5. EMS Operations
  6. EMT Pharmacology
  7. Infection Control
  8. Legal and Ethical Responsibilities
  9. Nutrition and Elimination
  10. Patient Comfort
  11. Phlebotomy
  12. Rehabilitation and Restorative Care
  13. Special Populations
  14. The Health Assistant
  15. Wellness and Nutrition

1. Anatomy and Physiology

  • Fixed an error and added clarification to the process of respiration

2. Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Updated the statistics on HIV/AIDS
  • References to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) were updated to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

3. Body Mechanics

  • Added content on additional safety and privacy concerns for dangling and transfers

4. Client Status

  • Added clarity on why it's important to learn about glass thermometers
  • Added a page on digital blood pressure monitors

5. EMT Operations

  • References to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) were updated to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

6. EMT Pharmacology

  • Update to worksheet question on Aspirin to better align with the lesson content

7. Infection Control

  • Updated to reflect current CDC guidelines for infection control, including an increased level of detail and clarity
  • Added new content on respiratory hygiene and the impact from SARS and COVID-19
  • References to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) were updated to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Added information on COVID-19 in relation to extended use and limited reuse of masks
  • Included COVID-19 as an example of droplet-acquired infection
  • Added vehicleborne as a method of indirect transmission
  • Note: There were no updates to procedures at this time

8. Legal and Ethical Responsibilities

  • Added terminology: Res ipsa loquitur
  • Added terminology: negligence per se

9. Nutrition and Elimination

  • Clarified that cream cheese, butter, and cream are not part of the dairy group
  • Details added on full liquid, sodium restricted, and high-calorie diets
  • Improved explanation of cultural food practices and personal choice of foods
  • Added mention that speech therapists help determine diets for patients with dysphagia
  • Added detail on hand hygiene for service meal trays and feeding patients with dysphagia
  • Added detail on interaction while feeding a patient and about never forcing patients to eat what they don't want to eat

10. Patient Comfort

  • Added content on disposable underpads, mattresses, and pillow coverings
  • Improved safety detail on special oral care
  • Included need for using care with hearing aids and updated the hearing aid care procedures
  • Added information on non-pharmacological pain management

11. Phlebotomy

  • Added clarity on the difference between order of draw and tube colors
  • Updated the order of draw based on current CLSI guidelines
  • Updated the Phlebotomy Draw in Order game to better align with the lesson content
  • Updated the Phlebotomy Draw in Order game to focus on the order of draw instead of specific lab tests

12. Rehabilitation and Restorative Care

  • Added notation that after a fall, a patient may need follow up care, as per facility guidelines

13. Special Populations

  • Replaced the phrase "mental retardation" with "developmentally impaired"
  • Improved detail on the characteristics needed in healthcare workers who work with the elderly
  • Improved detail on the socioemotional needs of the elderly
  • Added notation about facility protocol for patients on suicide watch
  • Emphasized restraints as a last resort and added clarity to restraint guidelines and documentation

14. The Health Assistant

  • Added more detail to scope of practice
  • References to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) were updated to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

15. Wellness and Nutrition

  • Clarified that cream cheese, butter, and cream are not part of the dairy group
