Health Information Technology Lesson Plans: Where to Find Them
According to the United States Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in medical records and health information technicians will grow 22% from 2012 to 2022. And the Occupational Outlook Handbook categorizes that 22% as "much faster than average" growth. Not too shabby for our current job market, right? As you help students explore careers and develop employability skills, you'll want to be sure that you are including HIT content. Where can you find health information technology lesson plans?
You might be able to find a stellar health information technology textbook out there. I don't doubt they exist. But because HIT is married to technology, and technology continues to progress, you might be concerned about the longevity of that textbook investment.
Online Content? Now you're talking!
Online health information technology lesson plans and content have a much better context for keeping up with changes in HIT. Technologies used in HIT are here today, gone tomorrow. And the same can be true of the content and health information technology lesson plans provided online. Seamlessly.

The Health Information Technology module is an introductory module that will familiarize students with how information technology affects the healthcare industry. In this module, students will learn new terminology, gain exposure to an EHR system and understand the importance of following HIPAA guidelines.
Unit 1: Health Information Technology Overview (Available Now!)
This unit provides students with a basic overview of Health Information Technology (HIT). Not only will they learn what HIT is, but they will also see how it affects both healthcare providers as well as clients.
Unit 2: Electronic Health Records (Available Now!)
This unit introduces students to electronic health records and gives them the chance to view what an EHR system looks like. Additionally, the students use a simulated EHR system to preform basic tasks such as checking-in a client, and making appointments for existing and new clients.
Unit 3: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) (Available March 2014)
The focus of this unit is to educate students on HIPAA guidelines related to HIT. Students will be given the guidelines and consequences of violations. In addition, they will also evaluate scenarios and determine how a violation could have been prevented.
