Introducing: Engineering Design and Problem-Solving Course

After serving as a Texas FFA state officer in 2018, Josh Witherspoon joined the iCEV team as a part-time employee for 3 years before taking on the role of content development specialist in 2022. Witherspoon holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural communications from Texas Tech University, in which his experience and proficiency in writing, marketing and CTE allow him to effectively communicate the successes of CTE educators and students and the value iCEV has to offer.

To meet the demand of 3.5 million STEM-related jobs in the next three years, STEM principals are now being incorporated in middle and high school classrooms. To help prepare the next generation of STEM workers, iCEV recently released our brand-new STEM site. The new site is designed to make STEM programs approachable, regardless of funding, space or teacher experience.

iCEV is excited to announce the launch of a brand-new course within the STEM site, Engineering Design and Problem-Solving. This course introduces students to engineering design concepts, problem solving processes and is project-based including lab activities and a capstone project. In this blog iCEV highlights what is included in the course and the value Engineering Design and Problem-Solving has to offer your classroom.

What’s Included

Designed to be a comprehensive curriculum, iCEV’s Engineering Design and Problem-Solving course simplifies the planning process for educators and introduces students to valuable STEM workforce knowledge in an engaging way. Within the course educators will find guiding documents including lesson plans, materials list for lab activities, iCEV correlations and a suggested pacing guide.

Based on educational standards, our team has developed materials (i.e., videos, PowerPoints) with industry leaders to provide students an engaging, educational experience. Each of the lessons included in this course focus heavily on hands-on projects through critical thinking and problem-solving methods used in a multitude of STEM careers.  Included at the end of the course is an Engineering Design and Problem-Solving Capstone project. This all-new lesson type is designed to be utilized at the end of CTE courses to allow students to synthesize the learning objectives of an entire course. Within the capstone lesson, you will find scaffolded support for teachers and students to conduct course-relevant project-based learning. These lessons are perfect for encouraging students to find real-world applications for their CTE knowledge.
