TEKS Curriculum Options for Principles of Health Science

DHO Health Science, Updated 8th Edition - eBookDHO Health Science, Updated 8th Edition eBook.png

  • Publisher: Cengage Learning, Inc.
  • Authors: Louise Simmers, Karen Simmers-Nartker, and Sharon Simmers-Kobelak
  • Copyright: 2017 - 8th Edition

DHO Health Science from Cengage Learning is an eBook (a digital version of a textbook), and is fully accessed online. This eBook is an electronic version of “the big red book,” which is widely known by CTE health science educators as an excellent resource.

This introduction from the eBook’s preface gives a good overview:

Health Science, updated eighth edition, was written to provide the beginning student in health science education (HSE) with the basic entry-level knowledge and skills required for a variety of health care careers. Although each specific health care career requires specialized knowledge and skills, some knowledge and skills are applicable to many different health careers. In short, this book was developed to provide some of the core knowledge and skills that can be used in many different fields.”

DHO Health Science will always be an anchor for health science educators. It is well known, full of very detailed information, and an eBook can help mix it up more than a traditional textbook. However, eBooks can be just as static as that paper book, so if you struggle with student engagement, DHO might not be quite what you are looking for.

Today's Health ProfessionsToday's Health Professions Textbook.png

  • Publisher: B.E. Publishing, Inc.
  • Author: Patricia Lockamy Royal
  • Copyright: 2016 - 1st Edition

This option is a print textbook that includes online components such as PDF Instructor Guides, PowerPoints, and Test Bank documents. Here is a short overview from the B.E. Publishing page on Today’s Health Professions:

“Which health career is right for your students? What do they need to know to be successful? How do professionals work together to deliver patient-centered, holistic care?

Ensure your students have the information they need to make informed career choices and understand the role interdisciplinary collaboration will play throughout their careers. This new text, together with videos and podcasts online at DavisPlus, explores the history, employment opportunities, licensure requirements, earnings, and career paths for all of the major health care professions.”

If you are more comfortable with a printed textbook, Today’s Health Professions could be just right for you. This text is pretty new (copyright 2016!) and includes additional online resources for both you and your students. Keep in mind that though this book is new now, what you choose for Proclamation 2017 will be your curriculum for 6 years… The content in the book won’t stay new forever!

Introduction to Health Care In a Flash!Introduction to Health Care in a Flash! Textbook.png

  • Publisher: B.E. Publishing, Inc.
  • Author: Marilyn M. Turner
  • Copyright: 2013 - 1st Edition

This is a printed textbook like the previous one, and also includes online components for both teachers and students. Here’s a short overview from the B.E. Publishing page on Introduction to Health Care in a Flash!:

“Prepare your students for rewarding careers -- from the office to clinical settings.

They’ll learn what it means to work as a team and communicate effectively, as well as examine the basics of the human body, how to assess patients, the legal and ethical aspects of health care.”

The Introduction to Health Care In a Flash! textbook has many accompanying activities online for students such as Word Searches and Memory Match games. However, there is something a bit glaring: The copyright date is 2013. That’s 4 years of changes in the health care industry that haven’t yet made their way into this book. Not to mention, you’ll be using it for the next 6 years!

If you choose this text, you may need to spend a lot of time confirming the content is correct before letting your students jump in.

iCEV Health Science Site

  • Publisher: CEV Multimedia Ltd.
  • Copyright: 2016

The iCEV Health Science site is an online curriculum accessed via the internet. The lesson content that students view is video-based. Along with the video lessons, iCEV includes digital assessments that are automatically graded, and other learning activities and resources as supplemental materials. In this press release about the iCEV Health Science site, the curriculum is described in this way:

“Delivered through iCEV’s online learning platform, the Health Sciences curriculum will offer courses in principles of health science, health science theory, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and much more. The content areas of the curriculum will focus on career pathways, background knowledge of the industry, basic and complex concepts of anatomy and physiology, and basic and complex concepts of human health.”

If you want to branch out and try something more than just a textbook or eBook, iCEV might be the right digital curriculum for you. One thing to be aware of with the iCEV Health Science curriculum is that you not only have to purchase a Teacher License for each instructor, but you must also purchase Student Licenses for every student.

Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future - TextbookIntroduction to Health Science - Pathways to Your Future.png

  • Publisher: Goodheart-Willcox Company
  • Authors: Dorothy Winger and Susan Blahnik
  • Copyright: 2016 - 1st Edition

This textbook is organized into five sections, one for each of the Health Science Career Pathways. Unlike the other curricula, this book does not come with any additional resources. This is how Goodheart-Willcox describes Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future on their website:

Unlike some encyclopedic health science textbooks, this text delivers essential content in a more accessible, inviting format. While the text teaches core health science content, students’ literacy skills and healthcare vocabulary are strengthened. Definitions of key terms, clear examples, and dynamic illustrations further promote student understanding.”

If you are most comfortable with a textbook, and don’t care to have any additional resources, Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future could be just what you are looking for. Though, don’t forget a textbook won’t be updated during the 6 years you have to use it!

Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future - Online Student Center

  • Publisher: Goodheart-Willcox Company
  • Authors: Dorothy Winger and Susan Blahnik
  • Copyright: 2016

The Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future - Online Student Center is a fully online curriculum option. It includes an eBook version of the textbook described above, and these other resources: Online Student Workbook, “Charting Your Career: Interest Inventory”, and the Companion Website. This is how Goodheart-Willcox describes the Online Student Center:

“The Online Student Center for Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future offers a complete learning package that is accessible through any Internet-enabled device, including computers, smartphones, and tablets. Students can study in the classroom or on the go: whenever or wherever it is most convenient.”

For a health science instructor looking to incorporate different types of digital content in the classroom, the Online Student Center is a great way to do so. But just like the textbook, the eBook version won’t necessarily be updated as the health care industry changes.

Principles of Health Science - TextbookPrinciples of Health Science Textbook from Pearson Learning.png

  • Publisher: Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Prentice Hall
  • Authors: Shirley A. Badasch and Doreen S. Chesebro
  • Copyright: 2017

This curriculum option is a traditional textbook from Pearson Education. With a purchase of the textbook, students also gain access to a digital eBook version. The text is comprised of two parts, Becoming a Health Care Worker and Health Care Knowledge and Skills. This description comes from the book’s Preface:

“Health science educators strive to give students the skills they need to become competent and productive health care workers throughout their careers. The importance of employability skills such as teamwork, effective communication, professionalism, and medical ethics has led us to create Principles of Health Science.”

There isn’t much information about this text available, as it is brand new. But if you want a textbook that comes with eBook access, Principles of Health Science could be the right fit for you. A potential downside is, just like the other textbooks listed, Principles of Health Science can become outdated during the 6 years you use it as your curriculum.

Principles of Health Science - eText

  • Publisher: Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Prentice Hall
  • Authors: Shirley A. Badasch and Doreen S. Chesebro
  • Copyright: 2017

This eText is a digital version of the Principles of Health Science textbook listed above. While Pearson Education does say the eText comes with print resources, I was unable to find any information on them. I believe the Principles of Health Science textbook and eText were created specifically for the TEKS Proclamation 2017, so there is very little information available.

Much like the other eBooks, this one is just as static as a printed textbook. You may need to be cautious after using it for a few years since, like a textbook, it will start becoming outdated.

HealthCenter21HealthCenter21 Interactive eLearning Curriculum for the TEKS Principles of Health Science Course

  • Publisher: Applied Educational Systems
  • Copyright: 2017

HealthCenter21 from Applied Educational Systems is an interactive eLearning curriculum, accessed via the internet. How does the eLearning work? Here’s an excerpt from an article on HealthCenter21:

“In the Learning Management System, teachers can set up customized courses by using any module from within the library of content. When the course is ready, students enroll to do the interactive eLearning lessons that teach health care skills and concepts.

In addition to the digital lessons, students complete worksheets, and take assessments which are automatically graded and shown in the teacher’s online dashboard. Teachers are also provided with complete lesson plans, presentations, and extra activities and discussion documents to reinforce topics that have been learned.”

If you are ready to venture into the world of digital curriculum, HealthCenter21 would be a good start. A benefit of choosing an eLearning curriculum like HealthCenter21, as opposed to an eBook or textbook, is that the content is updated regularly. This is important in the ever-changing health science industry, since you will use the curriculum you choose under Proclamation 2017 for the next 6 years!
