This module provides an introduction to entrepreneurship and the characteristics of an entrepreneur as they understand how to identify business opportunities by understanding markets and customers and the operational aspects of running a small business.

The Entrepreneurship module is designed according to the AES course framework, which includes four phases:

  1. Explore
  2. Learn & Practice
  3. Reflect
  4. Reinforce

Below you'll discover how AES can help you teach your students about entrepreneurship according to these four phases.


Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Famous Entrepreneurs

In this activity, students will work alone or with a partner to complete a worksheet on a famous entrepreneur. A class discussion can follow.


Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: Being an Entrepreneur

In this unit, students will learn about: the effort required to be an entrepreneur as they investigate characteristics, the difference between a boss and an employee, how entrepreneurship is a choice for women and minorities, the "path" to entrepreneurship, ways of becoming a business owner, and how to recognize business opportunities.

Unit 2: Evaluating the Market

In this unit, students will learn about: why it is important for entrepreneurs to know their markets as they define market segments, customers wants, customer feedback, why businesses should be involved in community, and finding the right facility.

Unit 3: Running a Business

In this unit, students will learn about: the struggles to maintain a profitable business and the importance of short-term and long-term planning as they explore profit and loss topics including opportunity cost, marginal benefit, marginal cost, total revenues and total expenses.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion

In this activity, students will work alone or with a partner to complete a worksheet on a famous entrepreneur. A class discussion can follow.


Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Franchise Ownership

In this activity, students will research requirements for opening a franchise of their choice.

Activity: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
