HealthCenter21: Accounting

This module provides an overview of the financial aspects of a medical office as students identify common accounting terms and concepts; explore billing, collections, and bookkeeping procedures; write checks; reconcile bank statements; and prepare deposit records.

 

Unit: Money Exchange Game


Description
In a fun but revealing game, students will play a game that mimics the exchange of money for health services as they "pay" a doctor for procedures and see what happens when money and credit run out.

 

Unit: Introduction to Accounting


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: basic accounting skills and tasks required of office assistants, strategies for discussing bills with patients, key accounting concepts, and accounts receivable and accounts payable.

Unit: Billing and Collections


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: billing and collecting payments, physician's fees, invoices, superbills, receiving and processing payments, extending credit, the billing cycle, overdue payments, and delinquent accounts.

Unit: Bookkeeping


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: bookkeeping systems, daysheets and patient account ledgers. They will compare manual and computerized systems, learn how to use a pegboard, describe types of write-offs and adjustments, practice posting, and handle returned checks and payments from collection agencies.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: disbursements including checks, expenditures, credit balances, refunds, paying bills, purchase orders, and petty cash funds and logs.

Unit: Banking


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: bank deposits and bank statements as they prepare bank deposits, describe how to endorse checks, identify parts of a bank statement, and reconcile a bank statement with office bookkeeping records.

Unit: Reflection Questions


Description
Students will journal answers to thoughtful questions about accounting in the medical office, such as the importance of performing accounting tasks with precision. A class discussion can follow as students share their responses.

 

Unit: Current Event


Description
Students will have the opportunity to explore on-topic current events in health care. They will find an article, then use it to complete a form where they'll share the main idea, supporting facts, and how this event might shape or affect the health care industry.

 

Unit: Accounting Department Scenario


Description
In this activity, students will act as a medical office assistant in the accounting department as they update a daysheet and a patient ledger, write a check, and prepare a deposit slip.
