HealthCenter21: Admissions

This module provides an overview of the procedures that take place when a client enters, transfers, and leaves care, including initial health evaluation and documentation, adult and pediatric vital signs, caring for patients' belongings, and the transfer and discharge of patients.

 

Unit: Empathy for a Patient's Anxiety


Description
In this activity, students explore the anxiety and uncertainty that patients may face when entering a health care facility.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: admissions, transfers, and discharges, including common patient concerns and ways to address them and handling patient's belongings with personal inventories and valuables lists.

Unit: Admissions


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: admissions and examinations, including general, EENT, and GYN, the typical equipment needed, and how to assist and position and drape patients. They will learn about baseline assessments and health indicators, including vital signs and body measurements. They learn how to take and record medical histories and observe and report abnormal signs and symptoms. They learn to consider a patient's feelings about admission.

Unit: Transfers and Discharges


Description

In this unit, students will learn about: the logistics of transfer and discharge processes and the emotions of the patient during these situations. Students learn to show sensitivity while completing transfers and discharges.

Unit: Communication Exercise


Description

In this exercise, students will observe a scenario involving communication between health care workers. After each scenario ending, students will answer questions to check their understanding.

Unit: Reflection Questions and Discussion


Description

In this activity, students will journal about caring for a patient's belongings and concerns, and the importance of proper documentation during admissions, transfers, and discharges. A class discussion on these topics can follow.

 

Unit: Admissions Facility Tour


Description
In this activity, students work individually or in groups to develop and perform an facility tour of their school as though it were a healthcare facility.

 

Unit: Patient Care Scenarios


Description
In this activity, students practice procedures learned in the module using various scenarios -- sometimes in less-than-ideal circumstances.

 

Unit: Current Event


Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a current event form.
