HealthCenter21: Ambulatory Surgery

This module provides an overview of the tasks to be done before, during, and after ambulatory surgery including infection control techniques, instruments for common surgeries, guidelines for using anesthetics, and providing follow-up care to surgical patients, including suture and staple removal.

 

Unit: Role Play Script


Description
In this activity, students work in groups to perform two role-play scripts that demonstrate that empathy and sensitivity are needed when working with surgical patients.

 

Unit: Ambulatory Surgery


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: the tasks done before, during, and after ambulatory surgery, infection control techniques, instruments for common surgeries, guidelines for using anesthetics, and follow-up care to surgical patients, including suture and staple removal.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: preparing the patient prior to surgery, including pre- and postoperative instructions, addressing patient concerns, and preparing the patient's skin and the exam room for surgery.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: guidelines for anesthetics, including local and injectables.

Unit: Postoperative Procedures


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: guidelines for releasing patients after surgery, cleaning the surgical room, the phases of the healing process, signs of infection, and how to perform suture and staple removal.

Unit: Reflection Questions and Discussion


Description
In this activity, students work individually as they journal about common concerns of surgical patients, pre- and postoperative tasks for minor surgery, performing a sterile scrub, and suture removal. A class discussion on these topics can follow.

 

Unit: Ethics Debate


Description
In this project, students work in pairs to debate an ethical issue in health care. Students will do research, prepare positions statements and then debate the issue.

 

Unit: Current Event


Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
