This module provides an overview of appointment scheduling. Students learn to schedule patients, handle unexpected visitors, and work through cancellations, walk-ins, and other situations.

 

Unit: Medical Appointment Role Play


Description
In this activity, students will role-play scheduling appointments, learning the steps, responsibilities, and limitations and how to overcome them.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: the role of medical office assistants in the process of scheduling patient appointments and the importance of appointment books, particularly as legal records.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: scheduling systems including open office hours, stream, wave, modified wave, double-booking, and grouping. They will learn types of appointments, such as routine, specialized, emergency, and acute illness.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: scheduling routine appointments as they distinguish between scheduling routine appointments for new and established patients. They will also identify unexpected visitors and ways to filter their requests.

Description

Unit: Managing Appointments


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: managing appointments including late arrivals, no-shows, cancellations and rescheduling. They will explore practice-management software and discuss pros and cons of electronic scheduling.

Unit: Reflection Questions


Description
In this activity students will journal about the effects of poor scheduling, the importance of communication in scheduling appointments, and explain triage. A class discussion can follow.

 

Unit: Handling Appointments


Description
In this activity, students will act as a medical office assistant as they prepare the appointment book for the next week, balancing scheduling patients and physicians in a way that meets everyone's needs.

 

Unit: Current Event


Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
