This module provides an overview of various diseases and disorders, explaining the definition, etiology, pathology, presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This module can be used as an expansion of the Anatomy and Physiology module.

The Diseases and Disorders module is designed according to the AES course framework, which includes four phases:

  1. Explore
  2. Learn & Practice
  3. Reflect
  4. Reinforce

Below you'll discover how AES can help you teach your students about diseases and disorders according to these four phases.


Phase 1: Explore

Activity: Defining Disease and Disorder

In this activity, students can work individually or in a group to define and differentiate the terms disease and disorder. 


Phase 2: Learn & Practice

Unit 1: Module Introduction

In this unit, students will learn about: expectations for the rest of the module as it defines common terms, explains the format of the remaining units, and describes the project they may be required to complete.

Unit 2: Multiple Sclerosis

In this unit, students will learn about: Multiple Sclerosis as they review its history, causes, risk-factors, and the course the disease usually takes within the body. They learn about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, lifestyle effects and long-term expectations.

Unit 3: Parkinson's Disease

In this unit, students will learn about: how Parkinson's affects the nervous system and explain the definition, etiology, pathology, presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Unit 4: Diabetes

In this unit, students will be introduced to diabetes. They will learn the types of diabetes, a brief history of the disease, why diabetes happens in the body, how it is treated, and how patients diagnosed with the disease can lead healthy, happy lives.

Unit 5: Asthma

In this unit, students will learn about asthma as they review its definition, history, causes, and how asthma affects the respiratory system. They will understand the etiology, pathology, presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of asthma.

Phase 3: Reflect

Activity: The Impact of Diseases and Disorders

In this activity, students individually answer questions about the personal impacts of diseases and disorders they may have experienced.


Phase 4: Reinforce

Activity: Diseases and Disorders Research

Description
In this activity, students can work individually or in a group to research a disease or disorder. The students can then create a presentation that can be given in front of the class.

 

Activity: Current Event

Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
