EMS Operations

This module provides an overview of the operational roles and responsibilities within the EMS system, including transportation safety issues, incident management certifications, multiple-casualty incidents, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials, terrorism, and disaster responses.

Unit: Incident Management System and Triage


Description
In this activity, students recognize the importance of Incident Management Systems as they perform triage at multiple-casualty incidents.

 

Unit: Ambulance Operations


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: emergency vehicle operations, including inspecting and preparing the vehicle, guidelines for driving it, positioning and parking emergency vehicles at a scene and safety precautions for roadway scenes.

Unit: Air Medical


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: air medical operations, including criteria for using air medical transport and how to activate and prepare for air medical response.

Unit: Incident Management


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: the Incident Management System, including required certifications for EMRs and EMTs, commands in an IMS, and the responsibilities of the EMS provider within an IMS.

Unit: Multiple-Casualty Incidents


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: multiple-casualty incidents, including MCI plans, stress management available to EMS responders, and basic triage for multiple-casualty incidents.

Unit: Vehicle Extrication


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: vehicle extrication, including vehicle stabilization, gaining access to a trapped patient, and patient care and protection during the extrication process.

Unit: Hazardous Materials


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: hazardous materials, including how to identify them, level of hazardous materials training, and the EMS provider's responsibilities at incidents involving hazardous materials.

Unit: Terrorism and Disasters


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: responses to terrorism and disasters, including, EMS responsibilities, warning signs and clues of terrorist activity, personal safety, terrorist weapons, and weapons of mass destructions.

Unit: Reflection Questions and Discussion


Description
In this activity, students will journal about guidelines for emergency vehicle operations, extracting a patient from a vehicle, leaking hazardous materials, and triage. A class discussion can follow.
