Students examine the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of conditions related to: cardiovascular and respiratory issues; acute abdominal pain; genitourinary and gynecological emergencies; altered mental status; behavioral emergencies; allergic reactions; and poisonings.
Unit: Cardiac and Respiratory Emergencies
In this unit, students will review the anatomy of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. They will identify the symptoms of cardiac compromise and respiratory distress. Finally, students will learn how to assess and care for patients experiencing cardiac or respiratory emergencies.

In this unit, students will learn about a variety of medical emergencies which include abdominal pain, problems related to dialysis, and vaginal bleeding. They will explore common assessment findings and learn to care for these patients. Finally, students will learn how to care for a sexual assault patient.

Unit: Altered Mental Status
In this unit, students will learn to recognize an altered mental status and the possible causes of altered mental status. They will discover how to assess and care for patients suspected of having strokes and seizures.

Unit: Behavioral Emergencies
In this unit, students will explore common causes of altered behavior. They will learn the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the signs and symptoms of psychiatric emergencies. They will also discuss methods used to verbally calm patients. Finally, students will explore the assessment and care of patients with behavioral emergencies, including techniques to assist with the safe and effective use of medically necessary restraints.

Unit: Allergic Reactions and Poisonings
In this unit, students will explore the assessment and care of patients with allergic reactions and poisoned patients. They will learn about the immune system's response to allergens, and list characteristics of mild and severe allergic reactions. For poisonings, they will discover that the signs and symptoms of poisoning depend on the poison and the way it entered the body. Finally, they will learn to call for a hazardous material team if they suspect a dangerous substance.
