HealthCenter21: Physical Exams

This module provides an overview of the medical assistant's role in EENT, CPE, pediatric, GYN and OB patient examinations. Students learn about the equipment, positions, and draping methods for each procedure and how to educate and prepare patients and assist physicians.

 

Unit: Use and Care of Lab Equipment


Description
In this class activity, students explore how use, operate, and care for lab equipment, as they view and handle equipment and try to describe and define what they are and what they do. After a class discussion where students try to identify and define items, the teacher reveals the name, purpose, and how to use each piece.

 

Unit: Introduction to Physical Exams


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: common physical exams, the equipment used in each, and review documentation.

Description
In this unit, students will learn about: vision tests, hearing loss, auditory tests, and how to assist a physician with an EENT exam.

Unit: Physical Examinations


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: assisting a physician with a complete physical exam, explore pediatric exams, vital signs, and vaccinations, and plot measurements on a growth chart.

Unit: Gynecological and Obstetrical Exams


Description
In this unit, students will learn about: assisting with breast, Pap, and pelvic exams as they discover how to educate patients on breast self-examinations and describe routine prenatal exams and screenings.

Unit: Reflection Questions and Discussion


Description
In this activity, students work individually to journal about how to make GYN patients more comfortable, how to adjust visual and auditory tests for children, how to respond to an anti-vaccination parent, and how to adjust a physical exam for a geriatric patient. A class discussion on these topics can follow.

 

Unit: Wellness Campaign


Description
In this project, students work in pairs to create a campaign to promote a wellness topic. They will perform research and create a presentation, a poster, and a class activity.

 

Unit: Current Event


Description
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
