Dawn Stewart teaches the Health Sciences Core classes and the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program at Oakland Schools Technical Campus Southwest in Wixom, Michigan.

Each year she has about 150 students in her courses, which creates some unique challenges.

Dawn struggled to find one-on-one time with her students. She needed that time to ensure every student understood the health care concepts and skills they needed to pass the CNA exam.

She also needed a classroom resource that helped students with long-term retention. After all, they needed to remember what they learned in her classroom long after they took their exams.

That’s what led her to HealthCenter21.

Now Dawn spends more one-on-one time with students and gets them ready to pass the CNA exam!

Here’s how Dawn used HealthCenter21 to change her classroom.

More Time Spent with Students

Both of Dawn’s courses require a lot of work from her and students.

In one of Dawn’s classes — Health Sciences Core — students learn fundamental health care concepts and hands-on skills they need before moving into the CNA program.

In the CNA program itself, Dawn uses Michigan’s Nurse Aide Training Curriculum Model to meet state requirements for nurse aide training programs.

This pressures Dawn to help every student as much as possible and also meet her teaching standards. But knowing who needed help with different topics was tough — until she started using HealthCenter21.

With pre-made lessons, customizable assessments, and automatic grading, Dawn can check on student progress at any point. Then, she can reach out to the students who need help.

“HealthCenter21 lets me spend more individual time with students and allows me to more frequently assess them,” Dawn says. “It keeps track of all the grades and allows me to run a variety of reports to see the students’ progress.”

Increased Retention for Future Success

When teaching two different courses, it can be like a juggling act for health science instructors. It’s tough to ensure students in both programs are being taught all of the relevant information necessary.

Because of this, Dawn also uses HealthCenter21 for its current and relevant information in both of her health science courses.

“The foundations modules are great for our basic lessons in the Health Sciences Core class,” Dawn says “The information is very helpful in providing a general knowledge base on which we can build student success.”

Not only is the content aligned with her courses, it is helping her students learn and retain information better than ever.

“By using such a comprehensive program like HealthCenter21, I can see evidence that all course materials are covered. And I can ensure the required academic elements of the CNA programs are effectively delivered to each student.”

Students are also able to know right away if they didn’t understand something.

“I love the frequent questions interspersed in the curriculum. It gives students immediate feedback on their progress.”

Ultimately, Dawn has found that by using HealthCenter21, her students are better prepared for lectures, discussions, and skills demonstrations that make up the CNA training program.

“HealthCenter21 has been an invaluable tool for students seeking CNA certifications. It has enhanced their learning and retention.”
