This module provides an overview of the care needed by patients before and after surgery, including preparing patients both physically and emotionally for surgery and recognizing and reporting infection after surgery.

In this activity, students work in teams on how to talk to surgical patients about their fears and concerns.
In this unit, students will learn about: types of surgery, including elective, required, and emergency surgery and major and minor surgery. They learn about infection control and medical and surgical asepsis, standard precautions during surgery, providing psychological care to patients undergoing surgery including fears patients may have.

In this unit, students will learn about: preoperative care, including operative information and postoperative instructions, preoperative checklists, and surgical consent. They learn about patient skin preparation and the assistant's responsibilities providing care on the day of surgery.

Unit: Operative Care
In this unit, students will learn about: operative care, including minor surgical procedures, how the surgical room and sterile tray are prepared for and cleaned up after surgery, preventing sterile items from being contaminated, and techniques for placing instruments, supplies and sterile solutions on a sterile tray.

Unit: Postoperative Care
In this unit, students will learn about: postoperative care as they identify signs of infection and learn how to prepare a postoperative unit.

Unit: Compressive Garments & Breathing Exercises
In this unit, students will learn about how to apply a binder and elasticized stockings and assist with deep breathing and coughing exercises.

Unit: Reflection Questions and Discussion
In this activity, students will journal about what should be done before and after surgery, recognize symptoms of post-operative infections and identify common patient concerns. A class discussion on these topics can follow.

In this project, students work individually to design a developmentally-appropriate craft that children can make and give to a loved one who is a surgical patient.
Unit: Patient Care Scenarios
In this activity, students practice procedures learned in the module using various scenarios -- sometimes in less-than-ideal circumstances.
Unit: Current Event
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
