Update: Insurance and Coding Module

Insurance and coding practices in medical professions have undergone a number of recent changes. As a result, we’ve revised the Insurance and Coding module to cover new scenarios students are likely to experience in the workplace.

What Changed in the Insurance and Coding Module?

IC captureWe’ve updated the Insurance and Coding module to increase its coverage of insurance and coding standards. Specifically, the module now discusses terms and concepts including:

  • Precertification
  • Predetermination
  • Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN)
  • Working with electronic health records (EHR)
  • Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
  • Changes to electronic claims processing
  • The Stark law

As you go through the curriculum, you’ll notice updates made across all four phases of the curriculum module.

In the Explore phase, we’ve replaced an old activity with a new exercise to better introduce concepts in medical insurance and coding.

For the Learn & Practice phase, the biggest change you’ll find is in Unit 4: Claims. We’ve organized the content in Unit 4 to make learning easier. Although the number of content hours has not changed, there are now four lessons instead of six. You will also notice minor changes to the other units to better incorporate new terms and concepts.

The Reflect phase discussion questions were changed to reflect the updated curriculum content.

The Reinforce phase has also been updated and now contains a single activity, “Fill Out a Claim Form.” This activity was previously called “Insurance and Coding Scenario.” While the new project is largely the same, the student instructions and forms are improved for better clarity and understanding.

What Do Teachers Need to Do to Use the New Content?

The Insurance and Coding module has been automatically updated for you. If you used this module previously, we recommend you dive into the revamped version to see what’s new.

If you downloaded or printed any materials from the module before July 9, 2022, you should redownload them to get their latest versions. This may include:

  • Teacher lesson plans
  • Teacher presentations
  • Student worksheets and sample answers
  • Lesson transcripts
  • Quiz answer keys
  • Module Test answer key
  • Student activity resources

Any custom exams created with the previous version of the Insurance and Coding module may include questions that no longer align with the curriculum content. We recommend you review any current custom exams and either remove the outdated questions or create a new exam
